Why switch

Why homeowners replace natural grass with synthetic turf

Natural grass costs time and money: watering, mowing, fertilizing and fixing dry patches, brown and yellow spots and pet damage. Artificial grass removes most of that work. It needs minimal maintenance, stands up to the weather and can be installed on soil or on hard surfaces.

Once you switch, there is no lawn to water, so you save on water bills and conserve water during California’s droughts. Today’s turf drains well, keeps its color and closely replicates the look and feel of real grass.

Whether you want a turf putting green, playground turf, pet turf for a dog run or a new lawn, we will recommend turf that suits the space and your budget.

Installation

How an artificial grass lawn is installed

Most of the work happens before the turf is unrolled. A well-prepared base is what keeps a lawn level, draining and looking good for years.

  1. Measure and planAt the free estimate we measure the area, look at drainage, edges and access, and agree the turf and layout.
  2. Remove the old lawnExisting grass, weeds and debris are cleared and the ground is leveled.
  3. Build the baseA base layer such as crushed stone or gravel is spread and compacted. It gives the turf a stable surface and helps water drain away.
  4. Add a weed barrierA weed barrier under the turf helps stop weeds growing through.
  5. Lay, join and secure the turfRolls are laid in the same direction, seams are joined so they are hard to see, and the edges are secured with edging.
  6. Infill and brushInfill is spread and the turf is brushed so the blades stand up and the lawn looks natural.

Turf can also go over hard surfaces such as concrete, patios and decks. After installation, see our maintenance guide for simple upkeep.

Choosing turf

How to choose artificial grass for your lawn

The right turf depends on how the lawn is used and what is underneath it. These are the questions we go through with you at the free estimate.

Question to askWhy it matters
Who uses the lawn?Kids, pets and parties need durable fibers and a backing that holds up to traffic. A front lawn that is mostly looked at can put appearance first.
How much sun does it get?Synthetic turf can warm up faster than natural grass in full sun. Plan some shade, or a quick rinse, for areas people use on hot days.
What is underneath now?Soil, clay or a hard surface such as concrete changes the base and drainage the installation needs.
Do you have dogs?Pet areas need turf, a base and drainage planned for urine and regular rinsing. See pet turf.
What look do you want?Blade color, length and texture change how natural the lawn looks. We compare options with you at the estimate.

Cost

What affects the cost of an artificial grass project?

There is no single price per yard, because the work under the turf varies from site to site. These are the factors that shape your quote. We price them after seeing the space at a free estimate.

Size and shape

The area to cover, plus how many curves and cuts the layout needs around beds, paths and trees.

Removing what is there now

Taking out existing grass, weeds, rock or old turf, and leveling the ground.

Base and drainage

How much base material is needed, and whether the site needs extra drainage work so water doesn’t pool.

The turf you choose

Blade style, pile and backing, and whether an area needs turf suited to pets, play or putting.

Edges and obstacles

Edging along fences, beds and pavers, and fitting turf around trees, planters and other features.

Access to the site

How easily turf rolls and base material can be brought in, for example through a narrow side gate or up steps.

The same factors affect how long installation takes. We explain what to expect for your project at the free estimate.
